Black Friday

Ahhh, Black Friday. Black Friday is actually one of the (less noble) things I am thankful for. To me it is a firm start to the Christmas season, and I'm on board with anything that has to do with Christmas, especially when it also has to do with shopping and spending money (two very fun things to do!).

I haven't always been a fan of Black Friday. I think it's only been the last few years, but now I'm crazy about it. Everyone in my family thinks it's the weirdest conundrum ever, since 364 days out of the year I am the girl who loves her sleep and won't get up early for anything. But on Black Friday I'm up and out the door before the sun comes up.

This year was the earliest I've ever gone. My alarm was set to 3:00 a.m. and Joe, my dad, and I were in line in the cold at Sears by 3:30! But we had a good reason. Joe wanted a T.V. And while I also wanted a T.V. I didn't want to spend the money for the 46"-er Joe had picked out. But on Black Friday, we could get that T.V. for $300 less, so there was our motivation.

There were only four of the T.V.s we wanted in stock when we got to the register, and the woman in front of us in line as well as the man in back of us in line all wanted the same one. Somehow, we all walked away with one! Unfortunately, the huge box wouldn't fit in the car WITH the two dogs and while Joe was (almost seriously) thinking about leaving the dogs with my parents so we could take the T.V. home, we ended up leaving the T.V. with my parents instead. (They will be up this weekend for an early Christmas celebration, so we don't have to wait long.)

Anyway, that was our big purchase, but we also went to Target, JC Penny, and Shopko for littler things we wanted/needed. It was definitely a successful trip!

Do you do Black Friday?

  1. Okay well I have become a much smarter shopper lately but, I don't see myself ever doing the Black Friday wake up at 3am call! So, you didn't say: when you got home from the madness did you crash or what? Congratulations on the purchase - I've got one and it's great!

  2. You're much braver than I am. I can't stand the thought of waiting in lines full of anxious people in the wee hours of the morning. I've never shopped on Black Friday - I guess I'd just rather do without! But if you want a tv, $300 less is the way to go!

  3. You got up that early?! You're crazy! I took advantage of some deals online. Glad to hear that you got your TV though :)

  4. I grew up in a super small town that has one mall with approximately 15 stores in it. So I never really even knew about Black Friday until a few years ago. But man, the crowds creep me out too much to try it. I'm so afraid of being pushed and shoved and otherwise annoyed. Plus, like you I love my sleep!

Props to you for getting up at 3:00 to get the TV you wanted! That's pretty awesome.

  5. I don't know if it is completely ignoble. There is a camraderie in lining up at three in the morning to get a deal. It's a certain community of people that get together once a year to celebrate the season. Isn't that what Christmas is all about?
We don't have Black Fridays here in Canada but one year I'd like to head across the border to experience the madness.

    Congrats on your great purchase!

  6. @Kim Oh I completely crashed for about 4 hours after shopping. I love Black Friday but it takes my body days to get back on my normal schedule. :)

@Brandi There are definitely the people in line who are terribly anxious and not having any fun. If I hated it like that, there is no way I would do it.

@Ellie Deals online are definitely a more comfortable way to go. :) But I like the energy of being out with the crowds.

@DoctorsWife I always hear about the psycho people who shove and fight over deals. Luckily, the small town I was in didn't have all that craziness. Most people were just happy to be out and about.

@Kristine That is a MUCH nicer way of looking at it! It really is the energy of the day that I love - most everyone is happy and excited and it can be a bonding experience with strangers. :)
